Music Factory Records is shaking up the underground once more with the mind-blowing new single “The Clinic.” With Ari Joshua on guitar, Skerik on sax, Delvon Lamarr on Hammond B3 and Grant Schroff on drums, this collective of improvisers has delivered a smooth contemporary boogaloo ride that will turn heads. As soon as the first notes of “The Clinic” are heard, it is clear that this track is steeped in the analog sound of yesteryear, and the listener is immediately placed in a seedy bar where all social norms are thrown out the window. Joshua places smooth, sinuous lines on a bass foundation that is as complex as it is cool, swing.
Lamarr and Schroff get into a mesmerizing rhythm and dance with a lot of energy and soul. Together, they rejuvenate conventional approaches while ensuring that toes remain grounded in the contemporary. On this foundation Skerik and Joshua really start to soar, performing daring yet spiritually connected solos. Skerik sounds fully unleashed, tearing through the changes with a controlled chaos. Joshua demonstrates mastery across epochs, extracting rich timbre and polyphony from his instrument. Their call-and-response forms a spinning cathedral of sound, instinctual and intellectual.
Despite its roots in tradition, there is something very progressive about “The Clinic.” Its four-way conversation is always engaging and the build-up to climaxes never loses its relaxed air. In nearly 4 minutes, not a single note seems out of place in this well-planned yet naturally sounding statement of purpose. Let’s face it, “The Clinic” is straight up jazz-funk fire provided by some of the genre’s finest. It is yet another proof of Music Factory’s desire to go further and provide the funky people with the next level of heat. Gird your loins and prepare to hang ten on this sound surge.
