A band out of Glasgow, the Gilhoolys have now released their single ‘Little Glasgow Boy,’ and it is a good one, good enough to show that indie-rock filled anthems are what this band looks to churn out. These lads have been on the fringes of the music scene since 2021 but with this new single it feels like they are in top gear. Having based themselves in Glasgow , The Gilhoolys have started establishing themselves as one of the city’s more notable indie bands, thanks to their safe combination of melodies backed by a guitar and a more Scottish feel, which plays well to both locals and new listeners.
As soon as the song starts, it is impossible not to immerse oneself in a pleasant guitar accompaniment. It’s like something you’ve known all your life – like the Smiths and Manic Street Preachers but with a Glasgow spin. The vocals are especially memorable – the type that compel you to join in the chorus even before you’ve memorized the lyrics about “Little Glasgow Boy,” what I find most appealing about the song is how it embodies Glasgow itself. These guys have captured the spirit of the city and put it into this song in a bottle. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of those songs that people sing in the shower and then you hear it playing in indie clubs all over the city.
Yes, they are not revolutionizing indie rock here, but you know what, they don’t have to. The Gilhoolys have this unique gift of making the things we enjoy about the genre seem new all over again. Between the infectious hooks and their obvious love for their hometown, they’ve made something that feels both nostalgic and of the moment. If you’re looking for a band to watch in 2024, The Gilhoolys should be on your list. With songs like this and their reputation for a great live show, these Glaswegian lads could well be on the brink of a breakthrough.
