If you want a raw, unadulterated shot of pure rock adrenaline then Primal Cry’s blistering new single ‘G.T.F.A.’ is for you. Notorious for not playing nice Primal Cry is this German quartet and they deliver a torrent of seething riffs, thunderous grooves and unrestrained vocal intensity which hits like a sledgehammer to the senses from the very first notes. Down tuned fuzz, thick guitars snarl in all the fuzzy, ear splitting aggression of classic 90s grunge/alt rock. This is the band’s DIY production ethos in the best possible way: it’s music unbound, a witless wielding of studio trickery and pretence. A gnarly riff worshipping return to form.

But at the eye of the storm is the group’s powerful frontman, whose larynx-shredding howls and throat-shredding screams sound as if they’re cut through the sonic havoc like a battle cry. The delivery of his impassioned, vitriolic rants of furious diatribe against modern socio political injustices oozes of attitude and gravitas. It is no cheap sloganeering, instead unfiltered vitriol made with the conviction of the person dishing it out, yet as visceral as it is, ‘G.T.F.A.’ isn’t just unbridled chaos. Infusing substance to their sonic slugfest, Primal Cry kudos, for unpacking mature theme of inner turmoil, societal issues and defying intolerance. The depth and self awareness to which they elevate their bone crushing riffage is well beyond mere mosh pit fodder.

At a time when so much of today’s ‘rock’ is so hopelessly sanitized or overly corrected, Primal Cry’s willingness to strip things down to a primal essence is refreshingly pure. This unapologetic banger is surely the sort of thing that will slay live, but will also need to be crushed at maximum volume through the best speakers money can buy, but you guys get the point: “G.T.F.A” is a much needed kick to the lapels – a snarling wake up punch fueled by passion, genuine musicality, and a total absence of commercialized gloss, or compromises. Loud and gritty riffs will pummel your soul as Primal Cry reaffirm that the harder genres still hold solid, uncompromised, authentic artistry. Rawest of returns.
