From my perspective, the climate crisis has severely inflicted untold suffering on our planet, and I can see why The Sea At Midnight ‘s masterpiece ‘OUR BRILLIANT DESTRUCTION’ feels like a punch to the stomach. The Los Angeles-based band brought out the intricate beauty buried in the harshness of reality and created a breathtakingly beautiful and painful piece of darkwave synth pop that makes your heart ache and cuts deep.

On the first few bars,Vince Grant’s unfiltered vocals filled with emotion sends chills down my spine. This is because his words describe a world unbelievable and full of environmental catastrophe while being so vivid. The ever changing synths along with the beats had such an atmospheric compound that I was completely enveloped in it, making it utterly impossible to turn away from the harsh realism Grant laid bare. What truly elevates ‘Our Brilliant Destruction’ however, is special devotion to a cause which Enshrines it beyond mere artistic expression and brings it closer to sheer self sacrifice. Knowing that all proceeds from Bandcamp were going to support the victims of the wildfires in Los Angeles shocked me however it was a welcomed shock.

In that split second, I understood the meaning of the track, it was way more than simply intertwining melodies and happy chords. It was a true call to action. From my perspective, the global challenges can be daunting and as misleading as a “brilliant destruction” sounds, the cathartic release eases one’s mind, especially when art is expertly captured in such a manner. The strange comfort that grants unfold paints a poetic image for me. The notes blend perfectly with the intricate tapestry that is further enhanced by Chris King, leaving an eerie image that lingers after the song is finished. “The Sea At Midnight” magnificently brings forth the fact that art can have a major impact in changing the realm. It reminds the audience to be kinder to the world. This blend of harsh truth with emotion allows the experience of the song to hit even harder. I feel unnerved and inspired at the same time.
