It is interesting to listen to an album which does not want to remain on the same emotional plane, and this is precisely what Bloodlin3 does in their album No Mercy. Key contributors include Stephen King (2Severe), Mallachi (Miggidy), and Reinman Quiji (Blackrein), whose diverse talents and unique perspectives helped shape this fully realized artistic statement about the intricacies of street life, the development of personality and spiritual depth that rings true and is artistically adventurous as well.
It begins with the strange, atmospheric introduction that gives an ominous picture of what is about to happen in the album. When the title song drops in with Twista doing his usual rapid-fire style of delivery and Bloodlin3 hitting hard with their verses then you know you are in for something special. The album is cinematic and layered in production, with everything ranging bassy piano and punchy drums to ambient textures that provide the emotional scope of the album.
The interesting thing about the song is that it is not afraid of being vulnerable as well as aggressive. Songs such as Test The Water and Heartache display the more introspective side of Bloodlin3 with emotionally charged vocals that seem to divulge the human behind the character. The juxtaposition of these songs with the more forceful collaborations makes listening to the album a dynamic experience as well that does not tire you out.
The guest features are well-placed and the appearances of such legends as Project Pat, Spice 1, and DJ Michael Watts make the whole thing feel real and rich without taking away the essence of the vision. Every duet is intentional instead of being compulsory, and this adds to the larger theme of the album regarding survival and development.
The album is recorded throughout El Paso and Paducah, which provides it with a special geographical outlook, which contributes to its narration. The quality of production is never rough, which gives every emotional layer its air of breathing, and preserves the gritty vibe that is the trademark of the project.
