The new single, Circles, is a strong exploration of the turbulent waters of the unhealthy relationship that demonstrates the further development of the UK artist. With the foundations of his midlands background and several years of genre exploration, Solum has created something truly powerful here, a track that is at once intensely personal and yet relatable to all.

The bedroom recordings style serves Solum exceptionally well, allowing a lot of intimacy to draw you into his emotional plane. The gnarled vocals are more than a stylistic choice, but a channel through which to express the naked hopelessness and helplessness of being mired in a self-destructive romantic cycle. The grittiness is somehow so wonderfully truthful, it does not make an attempt to make the realities of love gone awry pretty.

The musical influences of artists such as artemas, brakence, and beabadoobee are apparent in the rocky underpinning, but Solum has refracted these inspirations through his unique prism. The jangly guitars provide a very interesting melodic accompaniment to the otherwise heavier emotional content, and the deep, prominent guitar work provides the song with its indie-rock structure.

The thing that stands out to me most about Circles is that Solum has portrayed that exhausting cycle of toxic relationships- the push and pull, the false promises, the heartbreak over and over. His singing voice holds a fatigue that anyone that has gone through similar situations will understand right away. The production is very good considering it was recorded at home, and that the best art can be produced in the most intimate settings. This track shows Solum going outside of his comfort zone yet still keeping his unique characteristic voice that makes his music sound so unique. Circles is a strong reminder that the greatest music can be created in our most challenging emotional places.
