Even though it may seem like a lesson in itself, Brian Hunsaker’s Power Over You qualifies as a bold feat in the art of writing power ballads, and it does so by showing that an independent artist can indeed create a full-fledged cinema musical. After his famous debut Haunted, Hunsaker provides even something more spacious – a song that exists on several emotional and story levels all at the same time.
The composition of the song is brilliantly designed and starts with soft, pure guitar lines and progresses to the thunderous and emotionally charged crescendos. The vocal acting of Hunsaker is impressive in its range, as it switches between emotional and clean singing, as well as commanding and aggressive tones. This dynamic style works the storytelling to great effect, be it the interpretation of it as a toxic relationship story or a true essence of it an epic fantasy of magic and reluctant allies in the grip of magic.
The global effort in this song puts it to a new level. The Swedish drumming of powerhouse Mats Eriksson, the beautiful keyboard performance of Raymond Hayden, and the dominating bass of Clif Chambliss form a strong and rich soundscape, in which Hunsaker could see its vision without being overwhelmed. Matt Dougherty balances the polish and raw emotion in the right amounts and makes sure that no item in the production is wasted on anything less than the grand ambitions of the song.
The most interesting part of Power Over You is its progressive structure – how it takes the listeners through an emotional journey and makes it intimate and epic at the same time. The tempo changes to the silent reflection to the magnificent strength, which is a very nice reflection of the plot development.
It is even more appreciated with the knowledge that this came out of Hunsaker amazing “Car EP” project. Here is an artist who recorded a whole project at a time during lunch breaks as he dealt with fatherhood and grief and created something that sounds like it is massive. Power Over You affirms that Hunsaker is an artist who can turn individual strength into art that truly makes a difference even when the music is long gone.
