Something truly strong about music created out of the actual suffering is that it has real power, and this is precisely what Naomi Neva conveys in her song This Is Over, with incredible authenticity. It is a breakup song which does not succumb to sentimentality, instead directing female anger and helplessness elsewhere to create something actually cathartic.

The performance of the voice is running. The delivery of Naomi starts in a low, nearly pathetic tone, then escalating into something highly visceral with the chorus. She manages to project sincere sadness and frustration without ever going to the melodrama-level, rather, all inflections are justified, organic, and very human. There is no change in the production that affects the pureness of her voice, and they leave the emotional sincerity as the main point of focus in the track.

The instrumentation is right to the point. The guitars are distorted to give it a true sonic kick, blending grunge tendencies with a bit brighter touches to the melodies that make it significantly more emotional. Combining the richer textures and accessible melody provides a strong dynamic tension and does not turn the track into a one-note but still preserving its visceral appeal. The arrangement is ideal to the emotional flow of the song to give the intensity a chance to grow naturally without conquering the story.

What is so strong about “This Is Over” is its thematic straightforwardness. The song deals with the concept of absence, abandonment and hard knowledge that somebody cannot in fact give what you require. No excusatory hope, no idealised agony, but rather this: Naomi is facing unpleasant realities in a refreshing way. But under all the rage is a sort of nakedness, a kind of bittersweet recognition that it continues to hurt to abandon something when it may need to be abandoned.

It is also context-dependent a song that was written in mid-flight, struggling with unanswered questions, emotional upheaval in unimaginably clumsy conditions. That lived experience adds that sense of authenticity to every single moment. This Is Over is indie rock that has a purpose – music created by a person who is not afraid of using her pain as a weapon to create a real piece of art. Utterly compelling.
