Mercy Kelly of Greater Manchester have come back with one, called Out in The Night and it is at once obvious that this four-piece band does not have nothing against doing things in half. Since they played Kendal Calling and Tramlines Festivals, and otherwise, have racked up more than 400 radio plays, created on the grassroots strength, they have created something that seems both up-close and personal and stadium-sized.
The song begins with wailing guitars that end up directing The Chameleons gothic jangle but pointing to the anthemic scale of The Killers. The vocals of the front man, Jack Marland are emotive and powerful in a highly accurate tone, they bring out themes of the youth, escape, and uncertainty and do not descend to melodrama. It all has something raw north about it – that authenticity that must be experienced in life and not in calculation of the image.
The thing that made “Out in The Night” better is its production, which was done at the Kempston Street Studio in Liverpool, and was produced by Alex Quinn. Atmospheric synth textures perch the rhythm section that drives along with the chorus providing hooky melodies that are immediately implanted. The song is cinematically confident as every element has a role to play in the emotional story of finding an escape and dealing with more serious complications of life.
Having been formed throughout the winter of 2019, Mercy Kelly have started as an acoustic songwriting pair by Jack Marland and Adam Bridge, but it has since developed into a full-scale band, which, as of now, consists of bassist Thomas Mullen and drummer Connor Byrne. The fact that they have evolved, in terms of art, through their initial breakout songs such as Speak Too Soon and Breathe For Her and come up with this latest production, demonstrates that they have not lost their identity.
Being independent of any label promotion or advertising finances, Mercy Kelly is finding its own way entirely on the basis of quality and belief. “Out in The Night” proves fewer members doesn’t mean diminished impact – this is a band hitting their stride with uncompromising confidence.
