Something about Michellar’s Game of Love is incredibly nostalgic and the song seems like a rediscovery of a forgotten summer so tattered it has faded and gone. With the assistance of Minneapolis songwriter Rad Datsun, the San Francisco-based artist has made something that is truly heartfelt to listen to – a duet that affectionately and intelligently examines the playful nature of love.
The first thing that catches your eye is the ease with which the voices of Michelle Bond and Brad Johnson can be combined, both voices contribute to this love story being deepened. Produced by Romania producer Marius Alexandru, the song succeeds in being intimate and expansive, enveloping those harmonised vocals with the layers of floating synths and twangy lines of the guitar that would surely be seen as an influence of Fleetwood Mac without ever being derivative.
The instrumentation produces this beautiful light-minded environment, the one that makes you feel like opening car window and letting wind pass through your hair. However, there is substance in the underneath of that accessibility. The song reflects on the way we maneuver through the vagaries of love, the things we hold dear to the heart and the moments we have, which somehow make up whole relationships.
The best part of it is how unanimous all of it sounds, given that the demos were done in a variety of locations in America and then turned into an international version. That physical distance appears to have contributed more than it has subtracted of the emotional appeal of the song-there is a feeling of nostalgia that is simply a part of the song that is perfectly sincere.
Game of Love presents the skills of Michellar to combine emotional narration with the truly captivating music. It is the kind of song that can be listened to over and over again, and which you discover possesses an extra dimension with each time that you put it on.
