Lawnmother’s Medicine Hit Parade Mix starts off simply and stripped back with just a few notes, reminiscent of the beginning of a story around the fire. It grows rapidly and when the track finally lets go, it opens up with sound and energy in a swift pace that never completely loses its raw edge.
This is not a track to ease you in slowly; what’s going to hit you first is the energy. It carries you along in a rhythm that seems alive, recorded in a live creative jam to get the spark before it’s gone. It is loose, not sloppy, a looseness that is meant to be, three musicians playing together throughout, trusting each other with their playing.
The vocals are full of a unique level of confidence; playful yet serious. It’s one minute it’s like it’s playing games with you and the next minute it’s sincere without warning. The song has an unpredictable flow to it which is what makes it fun to listen to, you never know what’s going to happen next and it keeps you engaged the entire time.
Everything is understated and the musicianship under it is amazing without it showing off. The guitar riffs go in unexpected directions, the drums are alert and sharp, and it all comes together as though it was a natural jam session, not an idea that was conceived. It’s alive like many finished songs are not at least in this moment here.
The whole track also has a sense of nostalgia without being dated, it’s like it’s referring to old memories. It seems to be grounded in reality and lived in, yet moving forward into new space. At the end, it makes you slightly breathless as if you are watching a live show, instead of a finished product that you catch too.
