Alien Friends and An-Identified Flying Objects start “Happy People Won’t Hear” with a keyboard sound and shimmering guitars that immediately fill the space. The beginning is welcoming and comfortable. Nothing is rushed. The song is slow and seductive, luring you in slowly until you feel fully at home in its mood.
The vocals are subdued, almost as if someone is speaking out loud. More voices are added to the track as the track progresses. Once the guitars begin to open up, the vocals follow suit. It’s warm all the way through and there’s a sense of gratitude. The feeling of emotion is genuine and justifiable.
The most impressive thing about the song is that it continues to be grounded as it builds. The words have a depth of knowledge and experience, like they are from someone who has had a lot of life experience and learned from it. No attempt to impress. Instead, the song reflects honestly with a confident and purposeful melody.
The backing vocals are also well done. They wrap around the lead vocal in a familiar and comforting manner, akin to a bunch of old friends singing together. Close to the end, there’s a whimsical piano section that comes in out of nowhere. It brings in the charm and character at the right time and makes the ending interesting.
The drums hold everything together, but without demanding attention. This enables the melody and vocals to be the focus of the song throughout. There is no overworking or overpolishing of the production. It feels like musicians who believe in the power of the music and allow it to fill the space freely. The track ends with a warm and thoughtful feeling that remains after the music has faded away. It’s obvious “Happy People Won’t Hear” is a well-crafted song and every single part of An-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is meaningful and worthwhile.
