No words are needed for Dianne Forte’s instrumental “Hallelujah Just Keep Your Heads Up Now.” Music is really the only talking that goes on, and it’s done very well. The first few seconds of this song tell you where it’s going.
The entire track is full of lift. It doesn’t rush you there though. The pacing is slow, as though someone is taking you by the hand rather than dragging you. In the middle, you’re able to feel your shoulders relaxing without any effort on your part. This is a good example of layering. Various musical lines interact and never overlap. If you listen carefully, you can choose individual threads, or let the whole thing wash over you. Either is fine, and it’s a difficult balance to make as a composer.
What’s apparent is a sense of consistent warmth. Nothing is cool or mechanical. Each of the chord changes seems to reinforce the previous one, creating a kind of cumulative effect and a feeling not so much of a song as of a dialogue between the instruments, each completely assured of the other. Pacing is relaxed throughout. You don’t have to prove anything, you don’t have to show off. This restraint actually makes the emotional moments stronger because they are not forced on you but happen naturally.
This instrumental has no words to tell a tale of hope and encouragement that Forte is known for. No words are necessary for someone to cheer you on. The music does the rest, and it’s as clear as day. The song leads you to a different mindset at the end than it started with. Instrumental or otherwise, it’s not easy for any piece of music to do that. This is the type of song that comes into your head when you have a rough morning and need something to hold onto.
