The band Max Macready have created is like a late night drive with no destination in mind. The Hunt is a track that’s about tension, but not tension that screams. The type that moves around the room with you as you listen. This is a UK duo that construct their own world with their music, using old machines and envisioned futures, not what is in vogue this week. In that freedom the song has its own personality, not fitting into a mould.
There is a constant beat and rhythm to the song. There’s a coldness to the production, but it never feels distant. It’s contained and feels like all of the sounds were carefully positioned, rather than random. Such care can go a long way in re-listening. The most striking thing about this is the feeling of running to catch, all the way through. Two forces are in conflict; one going forward, the other just out of reach. It gives the song a very “nervous” quality that never quite calms down, which means you will stay engaged with the song.
The vocal is in the middle and is quite calm on the surface, yet has a feeling of unease. Never over-dramatizes. Rather, it allows the music surrounding it to carry much of the emotional weight, and the whole thing comes off as more genuinely emotional. There’s also a real sense of scale with this track as well, like it was designed for a large open area, not a small room. Hearing it is somewhat like being in a large place waiting for something, not sure what, not sure if it will happen at all.
Max Macready have created something which is worth the wait. The Hunt doesn’t come in from the start with a sales pitch. It wants you to sit with it, see the little things, and return for the next time it is played. At the end, you feel like you are being pulled towards something, but not towards what. Very difficult to do, but this song does so with confidence.
