With this one, I had to stop what I was doing because Harry Kappen did. Good Samaritans is out now and I have played it more times than I can count. It attracts attention quickly. The drums continue to roll, the guitars play on and before you know it you are bobbing up and down like you have known this song for ages. It’s the type of song you simply switch on.
Harry is a Dutch musician and music therapist for more than 20 years. He plays all the instruments himself, and records within his own home. Helping others is truly important to him. That is in the song, and without a big label behind him, too. He does it all himself. He has a lot of heart in his work.
His voice seems to come right to you, like a neighbour speaking to you over the fence. Then, during the choruses, Danna Gomez enters, making everything a bit brighter. Her voice is light and clear, and really lifts the song. They work well together and bring something special to those parts. I always had a smile on my face when they were around. There’s a little bit of David Bowie in the way the song is put together. It has that feeling of a small stage show playing in your headphones. Then there’s the guitar break in the middle which gave me chills down my spine. It fits the song really well. It carries the message it has to carry and then lets the music breathe. I enjoyed this section very much.
The message of the song will stick with me the most. Harry sings of the people who are able to help others without asking for anything in return. They are easy to overlook and are often among the best of us. This song pays them a compliment. Clearly Harry is singing what he truly has to say, so that’s why it resonates. If you need a bit of a boost in the mood department, listen to this song. I’m sure I’ll be returning to Good Samaritans by Harry Kappen. It brought me a smile and I thought I might be a bit kinder. Just don’t miss the middle section.
