It is somehow heartwarming to see a young musician explore previously uncharted emotional waters, and that is literally what OB1 did with “Miss You.” This 18 year old American born, UK raised musician has created something that is very mature feeling yet with the same honesty of being young and in love and in self reflection.

The first thing that you notice about Miss You is the difference in the feel compared to the previous work by OB1. In contrast to such energetic and driven songs as Coast to Coast and Hussle, the new song is more relaxed and contemplative. The signature PlugnB sound is still there, but it is seasoned with the elements of the Afrobeats that result in something new and very emotionally loaded. The combination seems organic and not contrived and indicates an artist who is actually maturing in his sound.

The song is an ideal prelude to his forthcoming EP High School Graduation, which emulates the nostalgia and bittersweetness of huge life changes. His classical training (he is a skilled Eb tuba player who has played in many orchestras) brings an added dimension to his perception of melody and harmony that lifts the whole piece.

The thing about this song is that it is authentic. It is not fabricated teen angst but a real contemplation of a person who has to go through actual feelings and emotions. The production is smooth but not slick enough to take the edge off the feeling. Even as co-founder of NAYA Music, OB1 is already looking past his own musical career, establishing opportunities to help other young artists and female musicians. Yet “Miss You” reminds that he has not forgotten about the significance of his own path of art. It is a song that makes one feel the universal feeling of longing and yet it features an artist who is obviously still in the beginning stages of his career.
