Something about “Stay With Me” is so superbly daring, as the newest release by Clinton Belcher that is filling the gap between power ballad and modern Country Rock with a great deal of boldness. It is not a mere love song but a passionate utterance that starts with small confidences and goes all the way to stadiums.
The first thing which impresses the listener is the vocal performance of Belcher. That unrefined, a bit raspy sound has an authentic weight, it has that sense of vulnerability that does not diminish. This is pureness that reminds of the rustic sincerity of musicians who have left a mark by telling the stories that matter and Clinton bears such a weight with pride as he cuts his own niche.
This track really comes out in the production. The song starts with delicate acoustic sounds that border on the confessional and slowly evolves to something epic. The orchestral accompanies cover in with the rock accompaniment-electric guitars that cry intentionally, the pedal steel that brings it down to Country tradition, and the strings that provide the cinematic expansiveness. A masterpiece of contrast, it goes to show how even independent artists in the present day can not only sound like they do in stadiums but do so without losing the emotional veracity.
The very structure is bold, arriving at a key change lifting the latter moments into the realm of true goosebump before returning back to the painfully vulnerable conclusion. It is this risk that allows Aerosmith to have a sensibility of arena rocks with the grit of Country Rock, a sound that knows the value of creating tension and discharging it at the appropriate moment. It is vehement, it is sensitive, it is not ashamed to be huge, just what a great power ballad must be.
