It is rather quiet and breathtaking how the little things that build up until a house becomes a real home occur in small groupings, moments that you never really notice are building your life until you take a moment to look and see. That is what Junifer manages to capture so beautifully in Thoughts For The Night. It is tender and deeply human, and the Chico-based artist has made something that extracts meaning out of the little things: toys that are left out after a long day, low-voiced conversations in darkened rooms, and that sentiment of a stillness that falls once the children have finally fallen asleep.
The way Junifer delivers their vocals on the song is this warm, instinctive ease that comes in this harmony that seems to be softly embracing the listener. It is sincere in the presentation – the sort that does not bother itself trying hard, as it does not have to. It seems as though one is being allowed access to the late night mind of a person, the one that flows when the world has shut down. According to Junifer, the song is a love letter to the actualization of what makes their walls count, and that fact exists in every note.
It is a magic of its production. It combines the folkloric comfort of the earth and the gleaming wonderingness of the electronic textures and produces what Junifer regards as cozy surreality. The complexity has a touch of Imogen Heap about it, the warmness a touch of Sufjan Stevens, the fine balancing act between the electronic and the very human.
That is what is so excellent about “Thoughts For The Night” not only is it well sounded but also emotionally well formed. It starts with a feeling of quietness as though one is sitting in the darkness contemplating the day. Slowly, the music expands, inhaling larger and larger until it gets nearly radiant – a soft swell of contact and thanksgiving. The melody is also paced on the same quiet confidence, but it remains relaxed and gets deeper in its flow.
With every new song since the first release Junifer continues to show more of their voice, considerate, personal, unmistakably their own. And this song haunts much after it. It is something of a memory that you would like to retain with you, and is tender along its edges yet warm. A reminder that it is not the building that makes up home but the people, the noise, the love and those tenuous late-night discoveries that make everything look a little bit different.
