Michael Gabriel (formerly of avant garde pop giants Men Without Hats) has been emerging from Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley in creative solitude and his latest single, ‘Heart & Soul,’ packs pure, sun dappled euphoria. This is not a nostalgic call back but a beautifully constructed piece of current day nu disco and synth pop that sounds instantly familiar but excitingly new.

By the first notes, “Heart & Soul” sets the effortlessly cool mood. Expertly blending lush, warm retro synths textures (the kind that instantly evokes 80s sophistication) with modern production sheen. The basslines that propel the foundation with funky bounce are inviting immediate movement. This is the sort of groove that’s been made for cruising around with the windows down or getting lost with the lights on dim on the dancefloor.

This is where it’s brilliant, because it is perfectly fused together. There are echoes of his influences (Air, Moby, Leftfield) woven throughout, but this is very much Gabriel’s own sound. Synth textures cascade and intertwine in a rich, intricate and effortlessly listenable way. Lovely thematically, “Heart & Soul,” the title does not fall short of expectation; it is the essence of love and longing expressed in itself.

The instrumental journey throbs with a yearning warmth that doesn’t need lyrics to find its audience. It’s music that doesn’t just say what it feels like to be in love, it actually feels what it feels like to be in love – evocative, romantic and deeply soulful. This single not only delivers a catchy tune but also showcases Gabriel’s growth and evolution as an independent artist.

Now out from under the shadow of his previous bands, he’s tightened the sound of his past (soul, jazz, dance, alternative) into something intense and enjoyable. It’s sophisticated electronic pop all the way through: danceable yet elegant, nostalgic yet future looking and still warm and alive with a humanity that lasts long after that last synth chord fades. It’s a perfect, groove laced escape.
