German nu metal act Gebrüder Manns is back with a blistering new anthem in “Sick Stuff.” Saxophone, guitar, bass and drums comprise the band, which features founding member Annika Manns on guitar, vocals from Marie Nielsen, and Karin Schroeder on bass, and Sabine Ahlbrecht on drums, all accompanied by a ferocious, rage-laced, groove heavy, socially conscious lyricism.

Right from the first second, “Sick Stuff” grabs the listener by the throat, with Nielsen’s commanding vocal presence and a pummeling riffs. Her delivery is so impassioned that every line rings with urgency and conviction as she tackles issues of oppression and the inequalities imposed on women. The lyrics are mostly in English, though Nielsen’s native Danish makes a pop up to give things an extra grit and authenticity.

Gebrüder Manns musically take raw energy and uncompromising intensity for granted, a hallmark of 90s nu metal heyday. Schroeder and Ahlbrecht give the rhythm section a running groove that locks perfectly with the dense, down tuned guitar work of Manns. While ‘Sick Stuff’ is a punchily visceral tune in itself, the metallic heft and hip-hop inspired dynamics help keep it consistently raw and visceral, while for all its sonic brutality, there’s an undeniable sense of melody and hook driven sensibility to ‘Sick Stuff’s’ core. One of the standout moments is the chorus, which features hooksy vocal refrains of which it is impossible to become tired.

‘Sick Stuff’ is more than a nu metal nostalgia trip, but a timely clarion call for gender equality and for respect for human rights as applied to all. Palpable is righteous fury of Gebrüder Manns, unapologetic music of Gebrüder Manns, the sheer force of their musical onslaught is amplified by this. Headbanging is just as much an act of resistance as it is catharsis; it’s a potent reminder, as it’s only one of the scene’s most vitally compelling forces in what is a crowded arena of nu-metal revivalists. Opening with the truly blistering ‘Sick Stuff’, they solidify their position as Germany’s top purveyors of socially aware rap metal anthems.
