Gus Defelice, an Italian talent residing in London, has outdone himself once again in his latest instrumental project “Starlight.” As a longtime fan of progressive metal, it is easy to get lost in the depths of the cosmos he has created.Even the opening atmospheric swells set the mood brilliantly, Gus demonstrates why he is such a major figure in instrumental metal.
The moment the song begins, he starts to build tension with layered textures, only to let loose with his evocative guitar mastery later on. What really catches my attention is how he blends emotion and technical power without losing the other. Sure, his technical expertise under the wing of Megadeth’s Kiko Loureiro is astounding, but his emotions are so captivating that they are equally, if not more, impressive.
The song is scored with grandiose notes, full of vibrant cuts and transitions from beauty to power, all in a flawless rhythm. While Gus’s lead guitar dances vividly throughout the mixing, each of his notes strikes with purpose, complementing the vibrant drumming and sturdy rhythm. Instead of words, the song is able to tell its greater story on its own. With reference to his idols in Dream Theater and Gojira, Gus is able to take his distinct approach to music. He combines elements of progressive metal alongside deep atmospheric elements to develop intricate and complex emotions that feel genuine.
His supremely high producing standard allows each facet of his artistry to be heard without any restrictions. What distinguishes this track is how the musical elements transform and develop. Most of the instrumental progression metal pieces portray intense set of emotions for the listeners. Starlight tries to take a different approach by trying to untangle deeper feelings. The breakdown excited me, featuring some of the most emotional guitar I’ve heard this year. This single provides a refreshing preview of Gus’ new concept album, The Sound of Inevitability. If Starlight is anything to go by, this prog metal sweetheart is sure to accomplish great things in the future.
