There are those songs where you get inspired seemingly within a second, as though you have just made a sudden leap into the air, and that is what “Chasing Stars” accomplishes at the very start. Jari Salmikivi has created something that is at the same time intimate and broad expansive as to look up at the night sky and realise that despite the end, there is always more space to go.
The song is quite articulate in its purpose. The guitar of Salmikivi is boldly in the centre of it all, and its notes are warm, with the fresh touch of the country. Echoes of well-polished modern country sizzle and more rough blues soul are present but nothing ever seems to be luxurious. Each expression is won over, each articulation is deliberate as opposed to pomp. The bass by John Thomasson is the ground holding the rest of the drifting thoughts together and the drums played by Caleb Gilbreath are moving the track on like a train giving it the impression of travelling and the outcome.
It is the feeling of unity in the song that really gets you into it. The show has a sense of openness and breathability, mere music is given space to stretch its arms, but it is never lost on a hopeful focus. The vocals come with such freshness and innocence which fits the adventure theme of the song perfectly. There is a slight scratch at the delivery and it just enhances the emotional appeal and makes each word sound sincere.
Although the recording took place in different continents, as Salmikivi in Sweden, or the US partners, preceded the final mastering in Nashville, “Chasing Stars” sounds wonderfully harmonious. nothing is scattered and disjointed. Rather, it is around with hope and wonder and you are left with that same desire to open up the windows and follow anything that arises.
