Kelsie Kimberlin’s new single “Walking Away” has a sad beauty to it that grips you with its first note, you will wish to listen. The song has this element that compels you to rather stop everything in your way, and immerse yourself into its melody. Being someone who has gone through the ordeal of parting from an unhealthy attachment, I related deeply with Kimberlin’s tale. She firmly walks the very thin line between being strong and being fragile, as she’s bound to empower someone with her voice. Every word she sings to the masses feels like she is whispering a secret to them.
There is this one moment where the orchestration rises and that moment actually gave me chills – it’s like when someone cuts the chains that have been holding you in place, only that it’s in a musical sense. What I do find impressive is Kimberlin – she takes such dark subject matter and is somehow able to elevate it. This is a breakup song in a way but it serves a greater purpose – it is aimed at people who have found it difficult to let go of something that does not serve a greater purpose. The harmonies seem like a collage of voices urging one toward the aim of achieving a state of liberty.
Since I have been following Kimberlin’s path as an music lover, she always amaze me with her never-ending growth as an artist. “Walking Away” seems to be her most grown up and accomplished piece of art to this stage. It’s a song that will end up being on many “healing” playlists, to help those who need it the most. There are many things that one may consider brave, but walking away when it makes sense is certainly one of them, the song isn’t just a pop song , rather it’s an example of great production. It’s a beautiful reminder of music’s power to heal and empower.
