CAUSING A COMMOTION in The New Citizen Kane is one of those releases that creep upon you. What at first seems to be yet another electronic collection soon turns out to be something much more than that- an emotional rollercoaster that is somehow introspective and at the same time impossible to resist at the same time.
Something truly fascinating about Kane is the way he manages to be vulnerable and infectious at the same time in this EP. It is like falling into the diary of some one, only that the diary has the best soundtrack you have ever listened to in a year.
The hook of Subconscious (Primordial Radio Mix) caught my attention at once. Something about the manner the voice of Kane cuts through those hypnotic beats just strikes different. It is almost as though you can hear the internal fight between the desire to have someone and the desire to control something–we have all been there at some point, right?
Still, what struck me here was his version of Aaliyah’s Are You That Somebody I didn’t believe it since, Wow, it is sacred territory. But Kane succeeded in honoring the original and making it seem absolutely new. The electronics does not drown out the soul of the song–it enhances the song.
I was surprised by the playfulness of “Bubble Gum Hot,” but there is certainly some depth underneath all that sugar-sweet production. And “Ratbag Joy”? Pure energy. The type of song that causes you to roll down the window and drive nowhere.
What is really astounding, is the authenticity of everything. Kane is not trying to show off to anyone–he is merely pouring his heart out over some very strong beats. The work is refined and yet not sterile, and sensitive, yet not melodramatic. CAUSING A COMMOTION is the type of EP that is enjoyable on several levels–it can be listened to both prior to going to sleep and when throwing an impromptu dance party in your kitchen.
