Something truly refreshing about music that embodies the contradictions of life, its daily mundane and heartfelt nature, is the ability to do it with humour and heart, and that is what Andrew Horth achieves in his song “Fumes”. This is high-energy indie rock that is unashamedly optimistic, rather than cynical, but he is just a marvel of constantly chaotic reality that still manages to keep a significant connection as the world around him is spinning out of control.
It is an instant catchy tune with melodic hooks and high-powered setup. What is most remarkable is that HorthWorld balances accessibility and actual musicianship. The two major transformations afford the structural ambition without being imposed on them; they come in naturally, pushing the song in a very true progression. This production is vibrant in a genius way- everything is alive and vibrant and one wants to get involved in it at the first hearing.
In its lyrics, Fumes deals with a topic that is really quite relatable: that weird kind of wearying, which comes with holding all the things at once, but somehow realizing that romantic relationship is still worth the weariness. Honesty is present here but dotted with candor. Instead of dwelling in exhaustion, Horth glorifies the gorgeous absurdity of deciding to spend good time together, even with the knowledge that sleep deprivation is going to follow. The story is breathable, having been truly grounded in real life.
It is amazing that the song was recorded, mixed and mastered in one six hour session at RatCat Studios through the hands of Natt Webb- a producer who had worked with some truly impressive alternative bands. However, there is no rush and the production seems thoughtful and intentional. The separate instrumental parts have their place and form authentic unification as opposed to unnecessary rivalry.
Some of the influences that Horth has been influenced by such as Sam Fender, Biffy Clyro, Ash and Green Day are evident everywhere, but the influences are unmistakably his own, as seen in Fumes. It is alternative rock that comprehends modern sensibility without being disrespectful of the traditions. It works well since, as a matter of fact, Fumes is a combination of happiness without losing plausibility. Utterly engaging indie rock.
