There is a disturbing yet fascinating sense of being about the new collection of Andrea Pizzo and The Purple Mice that smacks you in the face the moment you start listening. We Are All Bots is not only posing questions about our connection with technology, it is also making you face unpleasant realities of how deep we have embedded the digital addiction into our lives.

The title song sets the electro-rock tone of the EP right away, making this ideal sonic environment to play with the idea of digital identity. What impresses me the most is how they have integrated electronic sounds in the most natural way without sacrificing the raw emotional guts that makes their music so attractive. The production is futuristic and grounded which helps to support the heavy-weight philosophical ideas they are addressing.

To The Space and Beyond transports us to an entirely different world, but it starts with an acoustic intro, which gradually turns into something really cinematic. The guitar solo in this is stunning- bringing some layers of beauty and depths that make the song almost symphonic. That is the type of dynamic range that demonstrates the artistic maturity of the band.

Operatic splendor is introduced to the collection by the song “Eternita”, the balance between male and female voices produces an authentic emotive effect. The dramatic arrangements are dramatic in a way that does not seem dramatic and they achieve that fine balance between being accessible and being sophisticated.

The vision of Andrea Pizzo is very much evident in every song and the multi-faceted instrumentation of The Purple Mice is very much in place. The mixture of rock, electronic textures, and orchestra sound is something that feels timeless and futuristic at the same time. This is not mere music, this is sound narration.

The EP is a success in the sense that it takes complex themes with sincerity as opposed to cynicism. There is hardly any music that can make you think as hard as this one, and yet have such an immediate, visceral effect. Smart, moving, and completely compelling.
