I’m a lifelong music maniac, and I don’t think there’s anything that gets the blood flowing quite like the thrill of an absolute well executed retro rock anthem. The kids from Abbotsford Animal Souls have the new single here from their project and may I say it slaps all those sweet nostalgic sweet spots in the most wildly infectious way possible.
The first pound of the drums on this track just screamed pure, rip roaring vitality. Its punchy guitar riffs and driving basslines transport you to that time of classic rock. Sure, there’s a healthy dose of nostalgic homage here, but the performances are raw and real, the vintage vibes are fresh and alive, and a huge helping of the live wire energy comes from that mind blowing vocal performance from Ava Wolsynuk. However, this woman’s Range is unbelievable, going from soft intimate croons to arena shaking high notes, with never a second where the warmth of her impassioned, from the heart ferocity she croons is sacrificed. There’s a masterclass happening as Michael Fisher painstakingly layers those beautiful organ textures and awesome guitar leads into a beautiful wall of sound that will make you get chills.
The final product is a perfect bubbly reverb for Wolsynuk’s blockbuster vocal, but what makes ‘The Kids’ so stand out is how it perfectly bottles this wild, quixotic immaturity and complete sense of wonder that comes with being a child. The lyrics read like they’re pure youthful escapism: infinite potential — you can feel it all come crashing back to you magical around every corner. In our cynical adult world such a feeling is rare, but the Kids is such a potent, euphoric dose of nostalgia that will shake you to your core in life affirming manner, as Animal Souls have in those very opening seconds and first few minutes of frenetic percussion, created such a timeless rock gem, saturated in passion, personality and wide eyed wonder. One that I’ve been listening to on endless repeat, one that I’m sure I’ll be chasing this same electrifying high for years to come.
