Awaiting Abigail’s “Bad Mind” was like feeling a sledgehammer hit my soul. From the first blistering riffs, this Dallas metal band had me hooked. Abigail Hill’s voice is incredibly stunning. She is powerful yet vulnerable, raw yet refined. Her soaring melodies cut straight to the heart as she lays bare the anguish of battling mental illness.
I was utterly blown away by the sheer ferocity and tightness of the whole ensemble. Kori Tolfa’s keys were hauntingly beautiful. James Smith and Mike Tolfa’s twin guitars shredded like banshees, while Kori Tolfa’s keys added a beautiful haunting atmosphere to it all. It was the split rhythm section of Laurie Barnett and Heather Hammonds that really walked everything into that groove. “Bad Mind” puts you right in the middle of that inner war against your mind. The lyrics resonated so deeply. Abigail’s agonizing screams were loaded and visceral as she sang about overcoming all that darkness. Yet there is so much stuffing and palpable determination in the voice, not wanting to be defeated.
It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the powerful riffs that feel like a battering ram, and the rest of the song blends into an insane heaviness. But that fusion with Abigail’s captivating voice takes things to entirely different levels. She moves between nuances with seamless coordination and control, bringing fragility and unhinged raw power on command. The immense grooves make the song feel infinite with the “Bad Mind” hook. The song stays with me, even until the ripping finale. Awaiting Abigail exudes catharsis and defiance, pulling me in with their powerful “Bad Mind” and leaving me wanting more.
Awaiting Abigail captures my focus so effortlessly that it feels almost too good to seem real. Every aspect is combined in such an effective way that the incredible energy, melodic richness, and heavy sounds become intoxicating with every hit. No song has gotten me wanting to run through brick walls quite like “Bad Mind” has. From my perspective, Awaiting Abigail are arguably the most exciting metal newcomers to emerge in a long time. This is THE band to watch.
