Cute Goldfish released their latest hit “Deja Vu” which struck massive success with indie fans. When I heard the opening riffs with pounding drums start the song brought me right back to classic 80s guitar pop/rock. The members of the Northampton group flawlessly rejuvenate The Police’s signature sound in their distinctive musical style.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Stuart Smith delivers absolute perfection through his strong vocal delivery and Andy Summers-like guitar mastery. His brother Steve drives the drums with his hyperactive drumming that imitates the explosive beats and fills Stewart Copeland played in The Police. Sam McKain and Kev Garner maintain the rhythm section through their thick rhythm guitar patterns that drive the music while Sam McKain provides strong basslines.
The song stands out from the rest through its impressive production quality and numerous imaginative production techniques. When drums are treated with backward reverb delay effects in the middle section they produce a trippy psychedelic ambience. The water droplet sound effects made by Stuart flicking his cheek are surprisingly authentic during the track. The unique sounds created by shaking beer cans during the performance. Throughout their work Cute Goldfish took every possible measure to create this exceptional recording.
Through its lyrics the song investigates our fundamental doubts about life and existence which many people experience as they question if they remain trapped in repeating routines and repetitive behavior. The relatable themes and honest presentation alongside talented musical skills make up this outstanding body of work. The rest of Cute Goldfish’s upcoming songs need to equal the excellence of “Deja Vu” for the band to secure their breakthrough success. I found myself completely absorbed by the song.
