HorthWorld just dropped a lush, nostalgic Christmas anthem in time for the holidays that brings back some undeniable feelings of festive cheer and nostalgic warmth. Shining in the sun is the project’s ability to write addictively melodic power pop/indie rock with a cool vintage flair, which can be found in the form of “Merry Christmas (Make Amends).
The song opens with rich, analog tones and bright musical textures, transporting you back to the classic 70s pop era from the moment orchestral and choir swell into it. Andrew Horth’s lead vocals are exceedingly palatable, and seem perfectly at home in a sea of lavish instrumental flourishes. It’s easy to see this becoming a beloved holiday standard broadcast over the radio each and every year.
What really makes the song is the brilliant arrangement. Swaying brass melodies and lush vocal harmonies intertwine seamlessly, painting vivid scenes of carolers in the snowy streets. But there’s some modern musical sensibility in the undercurrents too to avoid a retread retro knockoff feel. While unabashedly taking on classic holiday musical tropes, ‘Merry Christmas (Make Amends)’ manages to stay a cut above due to the oh so pristine songwriting skills on full display. Horth’s ears for an indelible hook make sure the melodies stick in your head days upon first listen.
What’s also great about the song, and what I think works, is that the wholesome lyrics about making amends and embracing togetherness aren’t too saccharine, and the local collaborative efforts on the single deserve much credit from the Melbourne Town Band’s spirited brass arrangement to the soaring vocal ensemble work of Adam Hepkin’s Vocal Zone Voice Studio. “Merry Christmas (Make Amends)” is a true community effort in the making of classic holiday musical traditions that the whole world can enjoy, replicating the warmth and charm of Christmas songs and music of old. It’s a consummate holiday gem with soul and plenty of talent and cheer.
