This is the rare aspect of music that is both vintage and absolutely modern and Moon and Aries have done just that with Closer to You. It is the most cinematically ambitious project they have thus far completed, a noir-pop anthem which spurts with classiness and dramatic conflict.
The vocal performance by the character of Jordana Moon is unbelievable at the very beginning of the song with its beautiful emotionalism. It has a sense of deliberate taking of breath, every inflection, and as a result, it makes the air of intrigue, which never fully loosens.
The performance by Tom Aries is worth commendations. It is defined as crystalline and gives the track an exceptionally clear sound, as well as adds substantial dramatic effects to it. The rich piano chords and shining electronics form rich, retro-futuristic sounds which are both vintage and highly contemporary. The rhythmic base of the hypnotic flow offers strong forward power without ever losing the necessary of the introspection that is central to the song.
The melodic architecture is what is especially impressive. Their combination of influences of alternative rock makes the duo an intriguing listening experience and it does not lend to easy classification. There is trip-hop coolness, spy-themes intensity, noir sense all coming together to make genuinely coherent. The song itself is reminiscent of the soundtrack of a Tarantino film: dangerous but sexy, depressive and empowering.
Thematically speaking, “Closer to You” deals with transformation, longing and mystery in the most lyrical sophistication. The craft shown here represents the development of Moon and Aries in their artistic development. Nothing is redundant; all elements are used to structure the feelings of the song.
It is music that is intended to be used in a movie scene–a scene that at the end of the day, you are ready to give up to something bigger than yourself. Closer to You is an easy accomplishment of that transcendent quality and, as such, justifies why Moon and Aries have built such ardent international fan bases. Grasping and unbelievably fashionable.
