Stainvarp have brought it with something that really matters with the complete. The new offering of the Swedish outfit does not conceal its subject–this is parental love in the distorted guitars and the high-flying tones, and it has the full value of its emotional load.
The song begins with a lyrical closeness. Plucked guitar and voice, exposed and mesmeric. Then it builds. Drums come in, bass fills out the lower part and the electric guitars overlay until you are in a complete rock anthem without losing touch with its sweet center. It is the kind of structure that is reflective of the subject of the song, the silence being widened into something that is enormous and transforming.
Mattias Larsson does not make it too complicated in his writing. The feeling is simple: children change all things. They make life complete. Instead of being saccharine, it comes out with true force since the conviction is met by the music. The guitar playing is not brutality but heavy, the rhythm section is purposeful and not aimlessly charging and the vocal is sincere. You believe it.
What Stainvarp know is, that strong feeling does not require enhancement. The production is not cluttered, and every element breathes. The guitar solos are melodic without being showcase but to support the emotional flow of the song and not to demand attention on their part. All this leads to something–towards the presentation of protection, commitment, hope.
The hard rock on the other hand, devoid of posturing, is recorded in Gotland in the song entitled Complete. No performative angst. Only the bare realization of the fact that love to your children alters the basic equation of your life. It is simultaneously shameless in a manner to which rock music is sometimes unable to be, preferring sincerity to swagger.
The climax that occurs during the song appears natural as opposed to artificial. By the time it reaches its climax, Stainvarp make their case convincingly. This is what unconditional love sounds like when it is plugged and turned up.
