The new single from Los Angeles based rock project the Sea At Midnight, Burning, is a raw and visceral artistic statement. The track is a collaboration with Marco Cattani of the renowned act Chemical Waves, with the pair combining the two artists’ love of confronting the climate crisis into a work of sonic catharsis.

Right from the beginning of “Burning”, the song does not waste any time setting up a dark desolate vibe with the roughness of Vince Grant’s deep voice over the chorus of distorting guitars and dark synth layers. Gaining uniformity with its vigor, its instruments embody the growing chaos of environmental collapse, the drama and tangible fear resonating within the track, and throughout the performance.Another interesting point of this song is the complete removal of metaphor in Grant’s lyrics, opting for philosophy and escalating human impact on the environment.

As befitting the idea behind The Sea At Midnight, “Burning” doesn’t skimp on complexity astrally for the senses; the composition on the track is a rich, multi-layered masterpiece that unveils more with each listen. Though the track is all atmospheric and ethereal, there is a sense of heaviness which can be felt grounding the piece, and with Grant and Cattani as the driving force providing the punk rock backbone, the almost industrial like chorus and dissonant screams and howls of “Burning” are a great example of this.

This is the brass and percussion section’s big sound set up and given this is the music’s heart, there is no denying it packs unhealthy amounts of punch.Despite all its mad approaches and philosophical burden, “Burning” succeeds in creating an engrossing and tender sound world. Starting with particularly ominous and foreboding build-up and ending with almost tranquil, otherworldly antagonism, the song fully immerses the listener into a distinct realm of dread and barely hidden anarchy. For those looking for intense and anarchistic sounds and a good old dose of raw and unadulterated conviction, the wait is over.
