It’s a beautiful piece of music, and Filip Dahl brings it back with a new instrumental, Flying High. Aside from the guitar playing, there are no vocals in here and that’s exactly what the song needs. Already on the first few notes you can hear there’s someone who understands how to let the guitar sing on its own and not overplay it.
The Main riff is easy to play but sticks in your head. Filip’s melody writing seems to be a natural ability to write melodies that are easy to sit with and relaxed. Nothing feels rushed. It’s a slow song, but it’s a slow song that’s fun, I think. The rhythm section remains in the background, providing a steady, solid rhythm without being overpowering or stealing away the spotlight from the guitar.
Probably the most obvious thing is Filip’s playing. It’s clean, expressive and its emotion is heard in nearly every phrase. His musical style is easy to identify, something that is very rare. You can also hear that there are classic rock and blues influences from him, but not so much that he’s copying them.
It’s a good production as well. All is harmonious and orderly. There is no clutter or overdoing, and ample room for each component to take its place. That allows the guitar to have some breathing space and really carry the song the rest of the way. Anyone new to Filip Dahl will feel at ease with Flying High. For those already familiar with his music, it’s more of an addition to what he has done over the years.
