I must admit, this wasn’t what I thought I was going to get. When I heard that there was a Fortunate Son cover being released by Motihari Brigade, the project led by guitarist and songwriter Eric Winston, I felt it was logical as it is a popular song. But I didn’t expect it to hit this hard. I was kind of surprised; in the best way. It has a great energy right from the beginning, which immediately attracts you.

The vocals are immediately apparent. There is a rough, high and forceful voice, but it is very natural. The performance is genuine and I believe that can be heard on the first listen. It is never a case of someone merely copying the original. That’s more personal than that, isn’t it? Like all the words are meaningful to them. The guitars are really thick and rough and this thick distorted sound gives the song a lot of weight. The drums are fast under every thing, almost like military, and really fits the meaning of the song. When they’re all together, it’s all tense and urgent, but not messy or out of control.

I love one thing— the production isn’t too clean or slick. It has a kind of rough edge to the sound which makes it hit harder, in a good way. Some bands over-smooth things and lose the excitement of the music that first came out of them. It doesn’t happen here. It sounds raw and it’s intentional, it works really well. The chorus gradually pulls you in, and it is so memorable.

At the end of the day, I was left wanting more from the band. The fact that it’s just an album preview makes it more exciting, knowing we’re getting a full album. If the rest of the record has the same amount of energy and attitude, then it may be something really memorable. I most certainly am happy to find this one.
