There are some songs that feel like their own little world. That’s how I feel about Midnight Flow. It immediately takes you into this late night ambiance, energised by the quiet and neon lights. It is really full and engaging. This is a city around you, if you shut your eyes, you can imagine it. That’s a rather unusual sensation.
It’s great how the production sounds. Steady beats carry shiny synth melodies that don’t seem too fast, and don’t seem too weighty. A nice balance of the dance feel and there’s some more soft and more emotional under everything. I believe there’s a balance which is hard to achieve. It’s big and cinematic, but also very personal.
NEODYM’s voice is the centrepiece of the whole thing. . It’s rich, smoky and emotional in a very contained way. Never overdoes it or attempts to force emotion into the performance. There’s a sense of peace and simplicity. Perhaps it is this that makes it so compatible. The words actually convey the meaning without compelling any specific emotion.
There’s definitely 80s synthpop influence, but not in the sense of it just trying to mimic the past. It seems more like they were absorbed and molded into contemporary sounds. This newer production style does everything nicely – it’s sharper and clearer, but also retains the warmth that made that older sound so attractive. Midnight Flow is like a song you play late at night on an elevated volume level. It’s the “in-betweenness” that great electronic pop music sometimes strives for. It’s very beautiful and atmospheric without being overly so.
