The New Citizen Kane has assembled an EP reminiscent of waking up slowly and choosing to stay awake. “Free to Feel” unfolds across seven tracks, which build upon one another. By the end of the day, you’ve really been somewhere.
An artist who has worked for years to create his own world, not inside the traditional production model, and creating on his own terms. That’s an independent project and for that reason has a lot more character than something built from a formula. The opener, “Dream Logic,” sets a pulse that carries through the whole record. The melody is underpinned by driving energy, not energy that demands a response, but energy that is in a state to move in a dance without thinking. It immerses you in the ambiance right from the beginning, in the first few seconds.
The atmosphere of the songs alters depending on the movement of the music. “Metallic” and “Into My Heart” are light and open, almost celebratory, “Ugly Alligator” and “What’s Real?” are more thoughtful and intimate. The difference maintains a lively and dynamic EP, with each track bringing its own feeling. It sticks together thanks to the vocals. They remain warm and clear throughout the mood changes of the lyrics, and they have a consistent level of confidence in their delivery. As the music around them changes, tracks feel connected. The cover of “What U Waiting For” by Gwen Stefani seems like a perfect fit for the EP.
It is part of the project, and shows a willingness to explore its form. Finally, “Metallic” is an acoustic version in the closing track that returns it to a quieter and stripped back version. It’s the end of a journey, after all the travelling that has preceded it. It’s similar to getting air after a long walk. The New Citizen Kane has constructed something helpful here. “Free to Feel” is an EP that rewards full listening, and encourages you to want to hear what comes next.
