Matt DeAngelis has created a song that has a strong sense of urgency, but never strays from its form. From the first few bars, “Playing God” seems to have a certain momentum that never abates until the very end.
It’s the songs that DeAngelis has been writing since his youth that are here. He has a close studio band of musicians he has been working with for years, and you can hear the closeness of the musicians in how well everything is synced. The verses have real substance to them. The building is taking place under the ocean, but it seems to be growing and developing instead of remaining stationary. It takes control to perform, and it pulls you forward without running.
The song starts to expand into its larger moments with conviction. The entire band is joined together in a manner that seems earned, not sudden, like the song has been building up to this point all along. It lands with real impact. It has a classic vibe throughout the entire track, similar to the big rock songs that continue playing on repeat years after. It never feels like it’s copying anything though. It is just a natural part of its attire; an old jacket that still fits.
The song fades to more of a reflective and quieter tone towards the end. The shift in mood lends the song a resolution, as though it’s said what it has to say and it’s okay. Matt DeAngelis has included some honest, thoughtful stuff in this one. “Playing God” is reminiscent of a man who has been thinking about these things for quite some time and, at last, discovered the right music to propel them. It’s a song that you don’t forget.
