The Mess:Age song, “Light of Blue (Sugar Ocean Girl)” is a song that makes me listen for a while. It’s part of the Age Of Mess album, and has a warm, open sound. Hearing it is a bit like sitting on the seashore watching the waves.

Glen Brandon (Ziggy) started the London band. He penned, produced, played and arranged the song in Phoenix Production Studio. He has worked with Bowie and Duran Duran, and there’s a real sense of purpose to his music. Faith is also a huge part of his music. I like this song’s sound. The guitar is bright and clear, and the synths add a soft layer to the music. Something about the music reminds me of waves coming in and out. It’s a throwback to the 80s pop rock scene, along with a little of the Beach Boys.

I really liked the song and the music video too. There is sea, sand and sky everywhere, with deep blue colours throughout. The pictures are a perfect match to the music. I could see myself standing by the water looking out at the waves, watching it. This is a place where this song would fit nicely. The voice of Ziggy is warm and near, like he’s talking right to you. The verses are easy and relaxed and the song gradually builds up to a larger and more joyous sound. The chorus takes the entire song up. Whenever I hear it, I feel lighter. Paul Gold on bass and Jaime Page on guitar bring some energy to the music.

I really like the honesty of the song. It’s about maintaining hope when things feel heavy and having something to hold on to when life feels difficult. There’s a natural sincerity to it. Ziggy’s talking about something that is important to him, and he is hoping that it will be important to others as well. At the end of the song, I can hear the song in my head for a while. It’s a song that I want to play for others, maybe they like it as much as I do. The Mess:Age have made something warm and gentle here. I feel good about myself after it, as though I had had a quiet time by the sea I’d like to come back to.
