Rumour Den have provided us with a song called Chapter & Verse and it stuck with me after the show. It’s a rock song that’s all about looking back at life. The guitars play with a clear and bold tone and it’s all a lot of fun. It’s like a ride on a wave.
Rumour Den is made up of two friends from Northern Ireland, AJ Gilmore and Steve Simms, who have been making music together for years. AJ writes the words and sings, Steve plays guitar and forms the music. Music is bringing them back together and their love for it is evident here. AJ sings as a good friend leaning across the table and telling you the truth. His voice is trustworthy. All the words are distinct and you hear the care with which he sings them. When it was over, I wanted to hear it again. I couldn’t forget it.
Steve’s playing is a pleasure. He lets the notes bleed out and gives the words plenty of space. I like that. The bass and drums play like old friends and a subtle shimmer lies behind it all. There is no barrier, you can just listen to the song and take it in. The song is about a person considering how they would have liked their life to be and how it actually was. The music enfolds that thought with warmth, as if it’s a nudge to face the life they’ve lived. I really liked that. The title is appropriate too, for all life is a book being written.
The chorus is big and encourages you to join in. It’s the type of part that you may be singing for the next few days. Here Rumour Den have gone for a warm and welcoming sound and it works for them. Sounds like a band that is having fun with it. Chapter & Verse by Rumour Den is a tender and gentle rock song with lots of emotion. It made me feel hopeful, as if there was a new page waiting to be turned. Play it loud and make an ordinary day just a little better. Try it out and see where it leads you.
