AnyWay You Come is quiet and open with Fiona Amaka’s voice and a guitar that seems to have been carrying a heavy burden for some time. No large entrance. It just starts like a normal conversation, and that makes you feel immediately connected.
Her voice is warm and used, as if she sings about a real situation and not performs it. You’re convinced by almost every word the first time around. There’s also a steady sort of feeling under the emotion, as if she’s holding herself together on purpose to ensure that the song remains clear and focused.
It’s the no-frills nature of this track that makes it so good. Doesn’t go for big metaphors, clever lines. It echoes the same message time and time again as if someone is saying something they is afraid will not be heard the first time. That repetition is the rhythm of the song. The set-up remains mostly quiet, allowing her voice to overshadow it. A little bit of background noise accumulates up to her as the track progresses, but nothing else can match what she’s saying. It’s a little like a friend who is standing by, but not talking much.
The whole track has a feel of an ache, but not a despair. Rather it is more of a devotion, a willingness to hold on regardless of the form that love takes. It’s a love so great that it cannot be described without sounding sappy, but Fiona somehow manages to do it with style. At the end, the song doesn’t feel like a performance, rather than something you heard by chance. Any Way You Come is something that will stick with you long after you’ve finished listening it and Fiona Amaka should have a much bigger audience for writing something like that.
