One Empty Toybox has created a song out of something disturbing and made it music you just want to listen to! Cyberstalking doesn’t shy away from its topic, but neither is it too morbid or dark. It doesn’t take over the whole song, it keeps that idea in the song.

The band One Empty Toybox is simply Rob Dreyer and Nicholas (Nick) Viltrakis, two long-time friends reconvening after years of separation. The history has made the project effortless and natural. It seems like two people who already have a good faith in their own ideas and instincts, and therefore do not need to think much about what they do. The song opens with a solid instrumental foundation, featuring consistent drum beats and a groove that allows for all the elements to come together. From the start, there is an interplay between the synths and the guitar parts. There’s a lot going on, but the sound remains crisp and never overpowering or busy.

The guitar playing is immediately apparent. It’s definitely got a lot of momentum as it spins through the track, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s also a bit of a lighthearted touch to it. The whole thing adds to the song’s live, in the moment feeling, as though it were caught as it happened. The vocal performance brings a more dramatic feeling to the song. It is not just a layer over the instruments, but works with them. That’s why the voice and the music seem to be talking to each other. It helps to create a sense of unity and vitality throughout the track.

The song has a certain tension that doesn’t allow you to just relax, and it’s really perfect for the subject. It never feels forced or like it’s trying too hard to make a statement. The song is quite serious, but it’s still interesting to hear. At the end of “Cyberstalking”, you’re thinking as much as you’re moving. One Empty Toybox has created something that is personal and purposeful. It’s recorded by two people who still seem to be enjoying making music together after all these years and you can hear that in just about everything.
