The band One Empty Toybox is simply Rob Dreyer and Nicholas (Nick) Viltrakis, two long-time friends reconvening after years of separation. The history has made the project effortless and natural. It seems like two people who already have a good faith in their own ideas and instincts, and therefore do not need to think much about what they do. The song opens with a solid instrumental foundation, featuring consistent drum beats and a groove that allows for all the elements to come together. From the start, there is an interplay between the synths and the guitar parts. There’s a lot going on, but the sound remains crisp and never overpowering or busy.
The guitar playing is immediately apparent. It’s definitely got a lot of momentum as it spins through the track, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s also a bit of a lighthearted touch to it. The whole thing adds to the song’s live, in the moment feeling, as though it were caught as it happened.
