Vanna Pacella’s “Plead” exudes an uneasy sense that you can’t shake. There’s a frustration under all of the song, which never comes to a head but remains constant throughout. You can sense that feeling even before you know what the song is talking about.
A lot of this is done with her voice. It skips from soft to strong and back again, sometimes in the same line. This makes the listener a little uncertain about the direction it is going. Her voice is not stable or secure. While singing, it seems like she is working through a problem rather than presenting an idea. The guitar adds a rough edge to the song that is appropriate. It comes forward at the right times, but not all the time. It’s obvious there are heavier and quieter parts, and the difference is what makes the track sound alive. It’s never dull or easy.
The rhythm section is used to keep everything going underneath. The drums don’t need to stand out; they’re just supporting the song. This works because the underlying structure is solid rather than messy, and the more intense sections sound better. The one thing that I really notice is the honesty of the song. It speaks of being tired all the time from having to prove oneself to others, and that is clear. It does not feel as though it is teaching a lesson. It simply conveys a sentiment that many people feel but don’t always communicate.
Pacella wrote, recorded, and molded this track entirely on her own, and it’s evident that she has done just that throughout. The choices are direct and in line with one person’s vision. There is nothing that feels changed simply for the sake of everyone else. It seems to be a straightforward reflection of what she wanted to create. The type of song that sounds better after a second (and subsequent) hearing is “Plead.” The longer you spend with it, the more you’ll see. It’s well-crafted and yet still raw and honest.
