With his debut single, ‘Set You Free’, Rosso Tierney emerges as a potent force of emotional authenticity as well as a new voice. Unlike the classic heartbreak ballad, this track is a deeply resonant spirit filled anthem of freedom and resilience. Grounded in a sprawling soundscape of influences – ranging from Bowie’s theatrical flair, Queen’s grand melodic spirit, Benson Boone’s raw contemporary emotion to the hard hitting energy of artists like The Struts and Yungblud – Tierney creates a sound that is both timeless and urgently present.

‘Set You Free’ is a solid musical foundation upon which Tierney displays his musicality, not just vocally, but as a multi instrumentalist. Initial anchor is provided by some gentle, melancholic piano notes, then some perfectly layered guitar riffs come in and join them and they slowly and perfectly build up the tension. It’s spacious and rich, but generous with space; every element – the driving rhythm section, atmospheric keys, emotive guitar textures – has room to breathe and contribute to the haunting emotional arc of the song.

Tierney’s vocal performance is the real core of the song. It’s raw, vulnerable and there’s something technically controlled about it that allows for him to convey so much pain and heartfelt acceptance and ultimately a hard won sense of freedom. A standout moment is the guitar solo which does a lot with a whole lot of feeling in a little space, no words necessary. It soars, aches and on its way out releases, like the song moving from heartbreak to empowerment. Sam Graves (Responsible for work with Asking Alexandria) produced the track which features a polished yet powerful sound that is clean enough, yet possesses the right raw edge.

A breakup song, ‘Set You Free’ is more than a breakup song. Based on Tierney’s own voyage through mental health troubles — and spiritual awakening — the track provides real solace and strength. This takes personal catharsis and makes it a universal message: freedom is something you achieve by letting go, not of your partner, but of everything that’s weighed you down emotionally and spiritually. A stunning introduction to Rosso Tierney, “Set You Free” prospers from masterful melodic rock craftsmanship, raw vocal power and deep emotional depth, an impressive debut sure to be followed by much more compelling artistry. It’s a cheering song or a shoulder to lean on for sure, all enwrapped in a truly exceptional musical experience.
