There are songs that have no description but are very easy to feel. Under Your Spell is just such a song. It slowly wraps itself around you and by the time you realise what’s going on you are already lost in it. That’s not a bad thing, it’s a good thing.

This is a really satisfying instrumentation, breezy and layered. Some weird, kind of psychedelic, synths in the background that really add some depth to it. It doesn’t ever feel cluttered, however. Everything breathes. The lo-fi texture complements that dreamy, slightly out of focus tone that is perfect for this song. Nils Lassen’s vocals are in a very quiet, more spoken, hypnotic style. It’s not showy in any way. He does not want to impress you with his singing voice. He’s gently luring you into his world in the song and it’s a perfect fit. You are drawn closer to hear more.

This is an ambiguous, liminal space emotionally for the whole track. It’s about love and the confusion that accompanies it, the sense of not quite knowing where you’re at or where you’re going next. Lassen conveys that sense with a true deftness that’s difficult to achieve without being overstated. If you are familiar with the work of artists such as Talk Talk or David Sylvian, you’ll feel at ease and at home here. This is a great introduction to Nils Lassen for those who are new to the composer’s music. Gentle, film-like and poignant. Under Your Spell sticks with you long after.
