Some songs simply make you want to turn up the volume. For the Weak is one of them. It comes in with a sense of urgency, a sense of restlessness, it’s alive, guitars crash in. No soft start here. It goes for it and that confidence is contagious. There’s something very immediate about the energy of the track. It doesn’t slowly build toward anything. It arrives fully awake, full of tension and movement, and keeps that feeling going throughout.

It was an ephemeral situation that lasted for only a week and somehow Lana has made it feel like it’s larger than the story behind it. This one will be very personal to anyone who has ever been entangled in that confusing, intense back and forth. It’s honest, but not bitter – and that’s a tricky one to get right. Lana’s vocals are at the very front of the mix and that’s where they should be! Her voice is confident and not just a performance. The lyrics are really sharp, words that you would want to have thought of at the moment. Straight, a bit feral, and entirely human.

The context is what makes this so impressive. Lana is a seventeen-year-old Australian artist, finishing school and flying back and forth to LA to write and record. For the Weak shows an artist who is truly growing, not simply doing what she’s been told, but exploring her own boundaries. This is a real step up from her previous work. Larger, louder and more direct. It’s a type of track that gets you excited about the next one. Really good stuff.
