Despite the Wane opens “All in Vain” with a guitar line that sets the tone from the get-go. It’s dark and it’s beautiful. It has a nice chill to it, but it’s not going overboard trying to catch your eye. Rather, it gradually draws you in. Right off the bat, it’s obvious the band is going for a specific vibe.
The vocals lead the song with a deep low tone which has a great presence but does not assert itself. The delivery is very interesting. It’s not loud, yet it’s pretty strong, and the longer you listen, the more it builds up. It doesn’t sound like it’s trying too hard to impress. It sounds more like someone going through the song’s thoughts.
The guitar playing is also well done. It adds to every significant moment on the track and always seems to be in the right place. Nothing feels unnecessary. The riffs are crisp and focused, providing a solid base for the song and providing enough room for the mood to build around them. It’s that mood that really makes the song stand out. The atmosphere of the track is cinematic, like it’s part of a scene you can’t see. The synths underscore the guitars with a soft layer, giving the mix additional depth without overpowering. All sounds are purposefully laid out.
The song is about loss and searching for meaning, but never stuck in sadness. Rather, it perseveres with determination. It refuses to give in to hopelessness. The darkness and strength provide much of the emotional impact and a deeper connection to the track. In the end “All in Vain” will leave you in a contemplative state. It’s the feeling that lingers after the music has stopped. Despite the Wane have made something special here. The song demonstrates how, if used wisely, mood and melody can equate to volume.
