The opening of this song is pretty nice. The acoustic guitar is soft, calm, unhurried, it slowly draws you in before the full sound begins to open up. When it goes right, that’s a slow build that can feel really satisfying. Here, I think it really does. When it all falls into place, you’re in it.
The jangly guitars and rich reverb add to this strong sense of nostalgia as the song builds. It’s sort of like the best of the 90s alternative rock. Warm and refined, yet lively and vibrant. It’s also very smooth throughout, which makes the entire track sound bigger and fuller. I think that’s the right thing to do, and Sean MacLeod’s vocals are definitely in the foreground. His voice has a very strong personality and is very natural for this type of music. He’s not being too aggressive or anything. It’s just a confident, relaxed and honest performance, which is ideal for the song.
Something that becomes apparent when you listen is the natural flow of all things together. The transition from the acoustic opening to the rockier parts of the song is seamless and natural. There’s no forced or over-done sound. It feels like a well-crafted, well-arranged song that knows what it wants to be. It’s obvious that Sean has been a long time composer and musician and that’s reflected in the song. Light Up the Sun is quite grounded and confident in its care and skill. It’s in between indie pop and classic alternative rock, and it’s pretty good at both. A very fun song from an artist who has still got plenty left to say.
