There are some songs that take some time to show themselves. Let Us In by The Shrubs is one of these. It slowly fades in, like it’s sneaking up on you, and you’re all in before you know it. This gradual development is one of what makes it so effective.
The drums established the mood from the get-go. This pulse rolls and rolls hypnotically. In this warm, hazy way that’s very easy to get lost in, the fuzzy guitars swirl around everything. It’s optimistic and slowly paced, but there’s a subversive element to it. It’s the contrast that makes the song real. Sophie’s vocals are soft and reverb soaked, and they are a perfect fit for the music. There’s no forced or overdone feeling to it. It’s all very analogue, like it’s been pulled from an old tape reel. Which, as it happens, is pretty much what happened.
Most of this was recorded on reel to reel machines by Miguel and Sophie and it can be heard. The tone and the slight imperfection in the sound are what no digital plugin can duplicate. It lends Let Us In a true retro, spacey vibe that is perfect for this. And the topic is of interest. The song is about the speed at which we judge people, and the little change there has been even after all the things we tell ourselves. It’s a thoughtful message, presented in the most inviting manner possible. A wonderful duo performance of a very fine piece of music.
