“I Am the One” is a song that definitely stands out from “Misery Winter”. It’s like it’s leaning towards something more gentle, but it doesn’t feel like a complete repeat, more like a change of mood by the same songwriter.
He writes, produces and plays nearly all of his music. The amount of control he’s got over his own sound puts a personal touch on this track and you can feel him crafting every bit of it. The song starts softly with a keyboard sound to set a tone before anything else occurs. It brings a sort of calm that is immediate, the calm you experience when you go to bed late at night and your mind won’t turn off. It doesn’t shout for your attention, it softly draws you in.
The voice enters with a gentle pain. There’s a kind of stability to it, despite the vulnerability, like someone finally uttering what has been on their mind for a long time. It never crosses the line and this is why it has a stronger landing. The chorus begins to thicken with additional voices, building under the chorus melody. But it’s never crowded! Everything remains transparent and the bottom end stays light within the song.
The song then moves into a little bit of a different direction halfway through, and allows for a bit more space for it to breathe before returning to its core mood. At the end, it all comes together and it ends softly, as if it’s still pondering. “I Am the One” is honest and it is easy to relate to. Noah James Mass has really worked his magic here and it all oozes of it from the playing, pacing, through to the ending. It’s a song that you go back to when you need something that resonates.
